If you disassembled a unique item like Achilles' Spear and want to put the Reaper bonus from it on a different weapon, this is where you do that too. If you found the schematic for slashing damage, THIS is where you can change that for a few denarii. Say you have a nice sword but you wish it had more slashing damage on it instead of crit chance. All of those 'Piercing Damage I' or whatever schematics you found are used here. THIS is the reason you care about crafting. You need higher level smiths to use this tab. You keep the same stats and skills on it, it just gets stronger. This is for when you have an item that you like and want to upgrade it from rank 1 to rank 2 (or from 2 to 3).

Quick tip: you can make rank 2 pilum when you unlock the Forge by using 2 javelin parts instead of 1 when making them. Basically just for creating things and hoping it turns out to be something you want. You may have a nice sword, but want it to have different skills or something. This is basically only good for rerolling stats on unique items that you want to use or making new weapons/gear that has skills and stats that you desire.
